Avalon Garden: Coming Soon!

Next Steps

Our Vision for Avalon Garden - and beyond

We plan to build our first cooperative Land Trust house - Avalon Garden - at 1500 West 8th Street, the site of a long-time community garden in a low-income neighborhood west of downtown.  In addition to providing seven low-cost rooms in a beautiful space, we organize ways to infuse new social and community life into the existing garden. The Avalon Garden space is located near the beginning of the B-Line Trail, connecting its inhabitants and neighbors to downtown Bloomington with a convenient, zero-emissions route.

We are exploring an artist residency room using local art funding and to provide a place for people in surrounding neighborhoods to gather around agricultural, musical, and other community events. We believe that opening the garden space to become a community hub will strengthen neighborhood relationships, and allow resources to be shared, and the development of agricultural skills and the growth of native plants.

Beyond this location, we are looking to incorporate single-family homes into our affordable housing model as well and have met with several community members who are interested in contributing their space to the development of ACLT.

Finally, we want to create a social space for organizing efforts to build more affordable housing and a promote a stronger neighborhood.
